Some of my strongest work happens where disciplines overlap. I collaborate with visual artists, dancers, theatre makers, architects and movement practitioners, using sound and bassoon as material within a shared artistic process rather than as accompaniment added afterwards.
Marc Woodhead & Luke Crookes
An ongoing creative partnership, developed through ten years of working together.
Marc and I explore paintings, architecture, materials and everyday phenomena through music, movement, making and shared curiosity. Clay, tape, water, paint, a building or a sound can become a starting point. We both shape the whole creative environment, following the discoveries of the people taking part.
Our shared work includes at least two years delivering the National Gallery’s SEND programme, Summer on the Square, and a four-year anti-ableist creative enquiry at College Park with Paul Morrow, alongside work at The Wallace Collection, the Charterhouse, Pitzhanger Manor and with Open City.
This is a sustained artistic relationship that continues to evolve. We welcome commissions for workshops, residencies and longer creative collaborations.

Manchester Art Gallery & Ad Hoc Dance
For Physical Acts, a promenade performance responding to the Speech Acts exhibition, live bassoon became part of the choreography, helping lead dancers and audience through the gallery while responding to movement, space and artwork.
Open City: A Home for Me
A multi-year SEND architecture project bringing together artist, musician, architect, educators and students to explore building, material, sound, atmosphere and what it means to make a home.
Smudge — Solo Bassoon & Theatre
An artistic-research project exploring devised performance, embodiment, theatre and the development of a more deeply connected creative practice.
How collaboration works
I am interested in co-leading rather than defending a fixed disciplinary territory. The question is often: what does this room, artwork, material, story or group need, and what can sound contribute without closing down the other art forms?
